Review

Thank you so much to the Belgrade International Film Festival for reviewing us:

Lessons from 100: Reflections in My Centennial Year is a profoundly moving cinematic achievement that manages to capture the essence of a century within the intimate framework of a family conversation.

Directed by Matthew Floyd, the film serves as a bridge between the Greatest Generation and the Millennial perspective, offering a rare, unfiltered look at what it means to live a life of consequence. By eschewing a traditional narrator and allowing his grandfather, Jack Weber, to tell his own story, Floyd creates an atmosphere of immediate, visceral connection that makes the viewer feel like a silent guest at a private family gathering.

As a directorial debut, the film is remarkably assured. Floyd avoids the typical structural traps of biographical documentaries, instead opting for a narrative fluidity that jumps across time with creative abandon. The use of archival home movies and still photographs, seamlessly integrated with vibrant footage of 100-year-old Jack playing golf or dancing, demonstrates a sophisticated eye for narrative design. It is rare for a first-time feature director to handle such a vast amount of personal and historical material with this level of restraint and rhythm, ensuring the film never feels like a mere slideshow of the past, but rather a living, breathing dialogue.

The emotional core of the film is undeniably the "ham-it-up" charisma of Jack Weber himself. However, it is Floyd’s direction that channels this energy into something deeper than a simple tribute. The film doesn't shy away from the inherent tragedies of a centennial life - the loss of a wife of sixty years and the vanishing of an entire generation of friends. Yet, under Floyd’s lens, these moments of grief are transformed into lessons on resilience. The director’s choice to include the "unscripted" wisdom of his grandfather - such as the poignant simple question, "but what about love?" - provides a grounding reality that balances the film’s more celebratory moments.

The technical polish of the project further elevates it from a personal passion project to a professional standard-bearer for the genre. The "haunting and beautiful" original score by Anthony Mirabella acts as the perfect emotional tether, guiding the audience through the film’s more contemplative passages. Floyd has succeeded in creating a "dream fulfilled" - a feature film that transcends the traditional documentary format to become a piece of authentic emotionalism. Lessons from 100 is a triumphant debut that suggests a bright future for Matthew Floyd as a filmmaker, leaving the audience with a sense of hope and a renewed understanding of what it truly means to keep going.
